'Storm Radar' Tie Dye Design ~ A Blast from the Past
I was looking through some old notes and found this design from 2019, so I choose to explore it for this video. I tied 3 tees up the same way and dyed 3 different ways so you could see what each method of dyeing looked like in the end results.

    2 questions. 1-will the soda ash water mixture that is spun out in washer clog or cake up in the drain PVC pipe (eventually)? 2- Do I have to apply dye to the damp T shirt, or can the T shirt completely dry first (after soda ash treatment)?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 17 часов назад

      first, no the soda ash will not clog the drain up as it has been dissolved and will just pass on through ... many regular detergents have soda ash in them for your regular washing... this is why we use a special soap like Synthrapol or Blue Dawn Dish soap as they are both pH neutral, meaning they will not re-activate the dyes as you are washing them out and second, yes you can let the tee dry all the way before you add the dyes, I do this sometimes when I have tied up a mandala tightly with sinew and I want to insure better saturation ... most times I prefer to dye while slightly damp, but when tying a tee tightly with sinew, some extra liquid can get 'trapped' within the folds when everything is tightened up with the sinew and this can seemingly 'block' the movement of the dyes through the fabric there is one more way to do the soda ash... you can tie the tee just damp after the pre-wash, then dye it and then add soda ash to the dyed tee... I just pour mine over the top, let sit to soak in, then I flip and coat the other side... when I do it this way, I mix my soda ash with 2 cups instead of one and here is a video to show how I apply the soda ash, it is the third tee : ruclips.net/video/rkmAQxOu52A/видео.html in the files section of the 'Tie-Dyeing' page on FB, there is a listing for the 'Pariah' Method where Paul describes how he mixes everything

      I buy mine from Dixie Gun Works : www.dixiegunworks.com/index/page/product/product_id/3340 It is a little bit sticky which is good as that is the wax you are feeling, I buy a few tools at a time to save on shipping and if the dye is bleeding through the sinew, trying pulling a bit tighter, or wrapping more times ... and one other way if I really want to make sure I get a white line ... when I get ready to dye the wrapped tee, I will put some plain water in a bottle with a fine tip, then I will add water to the sinew lines, not much, but just a little so if something is going to soak in and under the sinew, it will be the water and not the dye ... I hope these tips help ✌️ and you are welcome, I am glad they are helpful to you ✌️

      Thank you and you are welcome ... as for the black lines... when I twist my spiral, I lay the front side of the tee shirt face down ... then when I add black to my spiral, I add it to the front of the tee, the side the was face down... the creases are nice and flat since they were against the table, so the black lines come out looking nicer and less splotchy ... ✌️

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 2 дня назад

      fitted bed sheets are a bit of a pain to work with due to the elastic edge... when I fold them, I tend to start in the middle of the sheet and twist or fold from there and then as I get to the outer edges, I just fold or lay the fabric where I can best get it to fit if I am going to do a mandala or something where I need the center of the sheet, I will take my time and carefully fold the sheet so that each of the corners are fit all into one corner ... I just try to line up the hems on them as best I can ... sorry I do not have any other secrets about working with these other than maybe have some help on hand as well ✌️

    Hey Mr Tie Dye, or anybody else out there. I’m routinely having problems with my blues setting in my tie dyes. I wash my tshirts first, soak in soda ash for 20-30 minutes, wring out, dye and let the shirt/dye chill for 24 hours in a bag. Any suggestions?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 2 дня назад

      you say the blues are not setting... does this mean when you wash them out, most of the blue dye fades away and leaves light colored blues?? OR, duo you mean as you are rising/washing, there seems to be blue coming out all the time?? I know most times when I check my wash water after the first wash, the color I see is blue, they seem to take the longest to wash out so a couple things, what is the temp when you are batching?? 70F is the minimum for getting the dyes to set decently, but I like to add some heat when I batch mine, this helps the dyes set up better and may help your blues ... you may also try a longer batch time and see if that helps

    What does batch means

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 11 дней назад

      it is just a tie-dye term, it mean to allow the tee shirt to sit after the dyes have been applied so the dye can bond with the cotton fibers and become permanent colors on the tee ✌️

    @kathylove6811 12 дней назад

    What do you do when they setting over night are they in water or drying then put into the water

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 11 дней назад

      After I apply the dye to them, they get set aside so the dyes can bond with the cotton fibers of the tee shirt ... they are wet with dye and I want them to stay wet ... this can be accomplished in many ways ... some people will put their freshly tie-dyed tee into a plastic bag to keep it wet, or it can be covered with plastic, or what I do is store it in a tub with a lid to keep it damp, in the tub I have. track, this allows any excess dyes to drip out and away for the tee as it batches ... I like to leave mine sit for 48 hours to allow the dyes to set up... BUT, 24 hours is a good batch time as well ✌️ here is a video that shows the tub I use : ruclips.net/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/видео.html

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 11 дней назад

      You are welcome and yes I do most times, BUT, it is not required ... it is a wetting agent so it helps the dyes stay wet for longer period of time which is good as you do not want the tee to dry out while the dyes are bonding or the bonding stops the other thing Urea does is it helps the dyes to dissolve better, which is especially good when mixing blacks or other colors that use more dye powder ✌️

    What adhesive spray do you use for the soles? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 11 дней назад

      the only times I use adhesive for the shoes is when something comes apart ... sometimes the sole insert will come loose during the wash out cycle and I will use 'Shoe-Goo' (it is a name brand glue found in the shoe section of a store, comes in a red tube) to glue sole back int the shoe after everything has been washed and is completely dry... I use rubber gloves to apply some of the 'Shoe-Goo' to the inside bottom of the shoe, then carefully insert the sole back in and then I apply pressure to make sure it sticks good, then I let it dry completely for a day other times just the fabric from the sole will come off and this is a bit more of a pain to put it back on with the sole still in the shoe, so I will check to see if the sole is a bit loose and if so, then I will remove it from the shoe, this makes putting the fabric back onto the sole a bit easier... I found some spray adhesive at the hardware store, this one is called 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive ... I will lat the soles and the fabric part onto some cardboard and then I spray the sole and the back side of the fabric with the adhesive, I let it set for a couple minutes according to the instructions on the can and then I match them up and press them down good so the stick... I let it set for a few hours to dry, then I re-glue the sole back in as described above it is a pain when the shoes come apart, but this is how I fix them ... I hope this has answered your question , but just in case I misunderstood the question and you were just asking about the dyeing process and if I use something to cover the soles while I dye them... I do not apply anything to the soles while I am dyeing them I am just careful to wipe up any drips or dye as they happen, if the dye it left on the soles for too long, it will stain them ✌️

    Hey Mr tie dye, I really admire your work and I have a question about dying. After mixing your dyes, how long do you have before the colors begin to weaken?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 12 дней назад

      I have my dyes around at room temp for 2-3 weeks after they are mixed before the colors start to get weak ..... the average room temp here in Oregon is 65-75F ...... I put a piece of duct tape on my bottles so I can write the date I mix them and then at the 2-3 week mark, I will add another scoop of dye and blend again... then I try to make sure I use them up before the 2-3 week mark again. but they will still work after this point, the colors just are not as bright as when they are fresher. BUT, to make your liquid dyes last even longer, you can store them in a mini fridge... I have used some dyes that were mixed 2 months ago and still had decent color ... or if you do not have room for a fridge, maybe store in a small ice chest ✌️

    Hey Mr Tie Dye, I think I saw a video where you made your own soda ash from baking soda. I'm curious how to do that safely, as I have pets around. Would baking it in the oven give off any unsafe fumes? Id have to unload it away from them in the garage where I mix dyes or do ice dye. I trust your input. Thanks again so much!! It's incredible you take time to write your viewers back when we comment! 😃☮️👕

      Yes I did make some soda ash from baking soda ... I did not notice any kind of fumes or smell when I did mine... it just seemed to sit there ... so I think it is safe to be done around pets ... here is the info from Paula Burke : www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/bakingsoda.shtml ~. although I used a pan covered with tin foil and she uses a glass dish... not sure that it matters, but if I did it again, I would use a glass dish just because .... BUT, on more thing is you can just use baking soda to soak in if you plan to Steam your dyes or heat them in some way... you can read more about that on Paula's site ✌️ and you are welcome ... I feel it is part of my calling to help where I can by sharing what I have learned about this art ❤️

    love this video and also your others showing how to do various tie dye patterns. My question is how do you do a wash in the machine if you have a front load washer? I don't think you can preload water as you can with a top load washer. Also, you can't stop the cycle and check if the water is still dyed or clear....Seems a little more difficult with a front load washer.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 15 дней назад

      yes the washing process is more difficult with a front load machine, I used one for a couple years, but I prefer top loaders for tie-dye... BUT, Here is what I did when I had a top load machine... I first tested to make sure a 5 gallon bucket fit into the front of my top loader machine... once I knew it fit, then I filled it half way with HOT water and some Synthrapol Soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap as it to is pH neutral) then I set abut doing my regular rinsing in the sink like I do in this video .... once I was done rinsing the tee, instead of putting it into the washer, Dropped it into the 5 gallon bucket and then I rinsed the next few tees... then I would take the 5 gallon bucket and carefully set the bucket on the edge of the washer and carefully dump the bucket into the washer... then I would fill it again halfway with HOT water and Synthrapol and rinse some more tees... then I would dump them into the washer... with mine, I found I could dump in 4-5 half buckets of water with a few tees before the water reached the level of the washer door opening ... then I would do the short wash and then two more longer soak cycles just like with the top load washer.... the only thing I could not do is check the waster color at the end, except by shinning a flashlight through the window of the door... if I could still see color in the water, I would run one more long HOT soak cycle it is kind of a pain, but it can be done ✌️

    I've been using the pariah method a lot, if I ice dye, do I need to soak in soda ash first? Also, does spinning out the soaked tied dyes mess up the shirts? I was afraid of them coming apart in the spin cycle. I prefer to tie them dry. Thanks again for the amazing content! ✌️☮️❤️

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 15 дней назад

      pre soaking for an ice dye is optional as you can sprinkle soda ash one with the dye powders, or you can mix the soda ash powder and dye powder before you sprinkle it on ... Oh and there was one time I forgot to add soda ash over the ice, so the next morning, after the ice had melted and I knew for sure I had not added soda ash, I just squirted the whole tee with liquid soda ash and then left it to batch for a couple days and it was fine as for spinning out a tied tee, no I have not had issue with the spin out messing up the tee, but you need to make sure it is tied up good (if a tee is tied too loosely and then not placed in the machine nicely, the force of the spin may flatten some folds) and then I try to lay the tee against the side of the washer and put others in to balance the load before you spin

    Hey Mr Tie Dye, can you wash or rinse with a bit vinegar at all? I have really hard water and vinegar can help the rinsing. Can spend SO long rinsing out my dyes. Have chronic health challenges that make simple washing a shirt repeatedly very taxing physically. I spent about 4-5 hours rinsing just a few shirts. Quite miserable, would love some tips on making it easier to do if you have physical/health issues.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 16 дней назад

      Yes you can add vinegar to your rinsing... it is acidic, so it will cancel out or neutralize the soda ash which is good when you are wanting to rinse the excess dyes out of your tie-dyes for washing ... as for the length of time spent rinsing... I used to spend more time doing it... I ALWAYS start with cold water as this rinses away the soda ash... then I would turn up to warm and rinse more, then turn up to hot and rinse more... then finally into the washer... but my hands could not make it through those long rinses... so, I now rinse in cold and warm, then I toss right into the washer, which I have filled halfway with HOT water and Synthrapol soap ... sometimes I need to do an extra wash to make sure all of the excess dyes are gone, but it does save my hands the extra work ... SO, I recommend shorter rinses and maybe add an extra wash cycle... I do a short HOT wash the first time which is where more of the excess dyes come out (this would be where the vinegar can be of help) so I use more SYnthrapol for the first wash .... then I do 2 LONG HOT soak cycles to allow more the the unbounded dyes to release and be washed away .... then if needed, I will do one more HOT wash .... I hope this helps ✌️

    Do you think water harvested from a dehumidifier would be a good substitute for distilled water or rain water for mixing dyes, if dehumidifier water is basically demineralized/distilled water? That would probably save me some $ and trips to the store. Also may prevent plastic waste. ***shrug*** Curious your thoughts.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 18 дней назад

      I have never thought of that (never humid enough to need one here in Oregon) ... but yes I think it should be fine to use that water for mixing dyes ... but I would not drink it 😂 ✌️

    How do you dry your converse shoes without shrinking them?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye 19 дней назад

      for the shoes, after they have been dyed and batched for a couple days, I do a rinse and wash on them, just in the sink and then let them soak in a basin... once they are done being washed... I rinse and then I use my washer to spin out the excess liquid... this squishes them just a bit, so I re-shape them a bit and then I set them outside to air dry ✌️
